Mortimer Jerome Adler (* 28. Dezember 1902 in New York; † 28. Juni 2001) war ein US-amerikanischer Philosoph und Schriftsteller.

Mit 14 Jahren verließ Adler, der Sohn eines jüdischen Juweliers, die Schule um Journalist zu werden. Er fand eine Anstellung als Drucker bei der New York Sun. In seiner Freizeit besuchte er Literatur- und Schreibkurse, wo er Werke von Autoren kennenlernte, die seine späteren Vorbilder werden sollten. Zu diesen zählen Platon, Aristoteles, Thomas von Aquin, John Locke und John Stuart Mill.

Namentlich die Lektüre einer Autobiografie von John Stuart Mill, in der Adler erfahren hatte, dass dieser bereits im Alter von fünf Jahren Platons Werke gelesen hatte, motivierte ihn schließlich zu einem Philosophiestudium an der Columbia University. Adler erlangte trotz seines enormen Interesses für die Philosophie und seinen Bemühungen in diesem Fach keinen Abschluss, weil er sich weigerte, die für den bachelor’s degree erforderliche Schwimmprüfung abzulegen. Dennoch wurde er in das Graduiertenprogramm der Hochschule aufgenommen und begann dort seine Karriere als Hochschullehrer. Einen formellen Abschluss erhielt er dann 1928, als ihm ein Doktor in Psychologie verliehen wurde.

1930 wurde Adler an die University of Chicago berufen, wo er mit ihrem damaligen Präsidenten Robert Hutchins als Vorstand der Encyclopædia Britannica die Sammlung Great Books of the Western World gründete. Adler bemühte sich in dieser Zeit auch darum, die Philosophie in andere Wissenschaften zu integrieren und sie als einen wesentlichen Bestandteil durchzusetzen. Er bemühte sich außerdem um die Bildung der breiteren Bevölkerung und darum, ihr die philosophische Tradition näherzubringen; aus diesem Impuls entstanden seine zahlreichen an Nichtakademiker gerichtete Werke. Er selbst sagte:

“Unlike many of my contemporaries, I never write books for my fellow professors to read. I have no interest in the academic audience at all. I’m interested in Joe Doakes. A general audience can read any book I write – and they do.”

Ein anderer Schwerpunkt in Adlers Wirken sind Theologie und Religionsphilosophie. In einem Interview von 1980, anlässlich des Erscheinens seines Werkes How to think about God, führte er aus, dass er nur aus moralischen, nicht aus intellektuellen Gründen nicht zum Christentum konvertiert sei. Die Konversion erfolgte dennoch im Jahr 1990, wozu er selbst anmerkte: “My chief reason for choosing Christianity was because the mysteries were incomprehensible. What’s the point of revelation if we could figure it out ourselves? If it were wholly comprehensible, then it would just be another philosophy.” (deutsch: „Mein Hauptgrund, mich für das Christentum zu entscheiden, war, dass die Geheimnisse unverständlich waren. Welchen Sinn hat die Offenbarung, wenn wir es selbst herausfinden können? Wenn es ganz und gar verständlich wäre, dann wäre es nur eine andere Philosophie.“)

Als Adler gefragt wurde, welches Buch er auf eine einsame Insel mitnehmen würde, gab er stattdessen eine Liste zur Antwort:

Kritiker Adlers sahen ihn als Eurozentriker und Dogmatiker. Er selbst gab offen zu ein Welt-Föderalist zu sein.
