Michael Sokoloff (hebräisch מיכאל סוקולוף; russisch Михаил Соколо́фф) ist ein israelischer Semitist.

Leben Bearbeiten

Michael Sokoloff lehrte bis zu seiner Emeritierung als Professor für Hebräisch und semitische Sprachen an der Bar-Ilan-Universität in Ramat Gan bei Tel Aviv.

Sein Forschungsgebiet sind die aramäischen Sprachen, zu denen er zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen, Textausgaben und Lexika vorlegte. 2009 publizierte er eine überarbeitete und ergänzte Fassung von Carl Brockelmanns Lexicon Syriacum von 1928.

Als er beschloss, das Lexicon Syriacum zu bearbeiten, fand er heraus, dass sich von den 800 dort referenzierten Quellen in Israel nur 200 bis 300 aufzutreiben waren. Daher reiste er zu Forschungszwecken als Gastwissenschaftler an die Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., wo die benötigten Texte zur Verfügung standen. Seine Arbeit wurde von der Israel’s Basic Research Foundation unterstützt.

Michael Sokoloff nimmt an, dass Teile der Evangelien ursprünglich in Aramäisch geschrieben wurden, obwohl nur griechische Schriftzeugnisse überliefert worden sind.
