CAF Champions League

Die CAF Champions League (franz.: CAF Ligue des Champions) ist der wichtigste afrikanische Vereinsfußballwettbewerb, vergleichbar mit der europäischen Champions League, der von 1964 bis 1996, analog dem europäischen Vorbild, als African Cup of Champions Clubs (deut.: „Afrikapokal der Landesmeister“) ausgetragen und von der Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) organisiert wird. Die Saison beginnt mit der ersten Runde im Januar und endet regelmäßig mit dem Finale Ende Oktober bzw. Anfang November eines Jahres.

Wurde der Vorläuferwettbewerb African Cup of Champions Clubs noch in reinem K.-o.-System ausgespielt, ist mit Einführung der Champions League auch eine Gruppenphase eingeführt worden. Im aktuellen Modus werden zunächst zwei Runden im K.-o.-System mit Hin- und Rückspiel ausgetragen. Danach werden in einer Gruppenphase mit vier Gruppen zu je vier Teams in Hin- und Rückspiel die Teilnehmer am Viertelfinale ermittelt. Die Erst- und Zweitplatzierten jeder Gruppe qualifizieren sich für die erneute K.-o.-Phase, die bis zum Finale in Hin- und Rückspiel ausgetragen wird.

Der Sieger dieses Wettbewerbs qualifiziert sich jeweils für den afrikanischen Supercup und die FIFA-Klub-Weltmeisterschaft.
